Peace series-Collage

Between 1988 and 1991, I created a series of nine 2-D collages that examined how humanity had approached the peace process from our ancestral origins to the presenbt. I began with the internal life of every individual with the first work entitled “The Descent of the Spirit of War ” to the last entitled “The Lesser Peace.” To Check out my gallery.

  1. There is so much symbology in this piece - I would love to know more about the inspiration for the images and visual references. One of my favorites.

  2. This 3-D collage was begun in Maryland at Pyramid Atlantic, a paper making residency in MD. The paper was handmade to my specifications. While still wet I molded it onto a plaster mold(20"x 20"), created templates from fabric sizing, and painted inside the templates with paper pulp. Once dried,I added 3-D elements, gold string and embellishments. The hand cut form of the 'flying priestess' was added. All mixed media elements had to added before the paper dried.
The title "Let the Games Begin" honored the immanent 1994 first free democratic elections in South Africa and was first exhibited at Bartel Arts Trust in Durban,SA sponsored by the U.S. Consulate in Durban(1996)during my Fulbright year in SA.

  3. Amazing. Thank you for the additional information about the highly specialized techniques that you used to make it - it helps explain why the piece looks as extraordinary as it does.
